Plot
In 1947, banker Andy Dufresne is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover, despite his claims of innocence. Sentenced to two consecutive life terms at Shawshank State Penitentiary in Maine, Andy faces the brutal realities of prison life. The prison is run by the corrupt Warden Norton and his ruthless chief guard, Captain Hadley, who maintain order through fear and violence.
Andy befriends Ellis "Red" Redding, a long-term inmate who has been denied parole multiple times. Despite the harsh conditions, Andy maintains his dignity and gradually earns respect through his intelligence and integrity. He uses his banking expertise to help the guards with their taxes, eventually becoming the personal accountant for Warden Norton's money laundering operation. Throughout his imprisonment, Andy never loses hope, secretly working on an elaborate escape plan while maintaining his innocence.
Over the course of nineteen years, Andy transforms the prison library, helps fellow inmates earn their high school diplomas, and befriends the institutionalized Brooks Hatlen. When Brooks is paroled after fifty years, he struggles to adapt to the outside world, highlighting the devastating effects of institutionalization. Andy continues to dream of freedom, often speaking to Red about his plans to move to Zihuatanejo, a small coastal town in Mexico.
The climax reveals Andy's stunning escape: he has spent two decades tunneling through his cell wall with a small rock hammer, hiding the hole behind a poster. After exposing Warden Norton's corruption to the authorities, Andy escapes through the tunnel during a storm, crawls through five hundred yards of sewage pipes, and emerges into freedom. He withdraws the warden's laundered money and flees to Mexico. Red is eventually paroled and, following Andy's instructions, finds money and a note inviting him to Zihuatanejo. The film ends with Red violating his parole and traveling to Mexico, where he reunites with Andy on a sunny beach, two friends finally free.
